Wirrapunga Indigenous Garden
Open Garden 21st – 22nd September, 10am – 4.30pm
Wirrapunga Indigenous Garden is open as part of the Australian Open Garden Scheme on the 21st and 22nd September from 10am to 4.30pm each day. The highlight of the event will be the showcasing of the incredibly beautiful orchids which grew, in abundance, throughout the area just 40 years ago. Unfortunately most of them have virtually disappeared and are either unknown or forgotten by most South Australians today. Forty five species of locally indigenous orchids now thrive at Wirrapunga. The opening dates, of the open days, have been chosen to specifically show off the most spectacular of them. Wirra (Bush) Apunga (The Goddess of Small Plants) also boasts over 400 locally indigenous species of plants and shows what the Adelaide Hills bush once looked, and can again look like. In addition there is the organic vegetable garden that supplies all the family’s vegetable needs. There will also be talks, food, plant sale, wildlife displays and an art display and sale. Funds raised go to the Foundation for Australia’s Most Endangered - FAME.
